Last Night - S/T (EP, Marzo 2013)

¡TRANSLATION IN THE COMMENTS SECTION !

  1. A few weeks ago we discovered Last Night, thanks to word of mouth (Aïda C. in particular), what makes us really excited.

The first thing that caught our eye was their nationality, French. Not that there are not great underground bands emerging from the neighboring country, on the contrary, lately it’s been a sweet time, one of them even entered in our selection of the best albums of last year (La Secte du Futur). But make no mistake, not very often crosses the Pyrenees things as amazing as the one we want to present you.

It is this trio’s first EP, auto-edited and with 3 tunes that shows us that this people didn’t come out from nowhere. In fact, they’re former members of The Cavaliers o Fix-it.

The first notes of "Cut Your Throat" are a bit treacherous, making you to think you are onto power-pop, but it’s just a mirage. The guitars become sharper, bringing even to mind some band from the legendary label SST, like Dicks or Minutemen. The melody, marching with some ankle-breaking changes, catches you in an addictively suffocating way, and the whole set end up sounding garage-punk, although in a few occasions they come close to touch post-punk. But no, that was another trick, just spin the record and look at the duration of the songs. From the four minutes that is "Cut Your Throat" we jump into two tunes made of less than three minutes of awesomeness.

RPM’s increasing, now you can smell the drummer’s sweat and the punk label is now out of doubt. "Try To Leave" shouts brutal fury and anguish, thanks to the heartbreaking voice that reaches epic proportions here, absorbing elements from Black Flag's hardcore (for example) or the very own Germs.

"Better Run" is half-way, slowing the rhythm, keeping a simple and purely punk melody and unfolding a darkness in the same line of Holograms, Diät o Iceage.

The icing on the cake is “Find a way”, not included on vinyl and only available for the digital version, following the path previously built and worthy enough to have been in the 7” like the other three hits.

Listen to them and you’ll see there’s no way out, you just can’t escape from Last Night.
